Why training BOTH sides matters!

Let's bring some light to that dark side 😉

Almost every pole dancer or aerialist has: a dominant side… and a side that feels like it doesn’t know which limb is which 😅

Whether you call them your A and B side, or your dominant and non-dominant, everyone in class will agree that it's pretty normal to have one side you like to train more than the other!

But here’s the thing: you can’t ignore your non-dominant side forever! 🫣😆

Sure, it’s tempting to favour your stronger side, especially when you’re learning a new move and just want it to feel good. But doing this too often can lead to:

  • Muscle imbalances (we’ve all seen the memes of a person with one normal arm and one hulk arm!)

  • Higher risk of injury - overuse of the same muscles can cause strains, which can stop you from coming to class altogether 😩

  • A rude awakening when you hit the next level and suddenly need to combo or transition on BOTH sides.

Moves you thought you had nailed might suddenly feel brand new when done on your B side—which can leave you feeling a little deflated if you haven’t been giving it much love.

So to avoid experiencing any of the above, here are our top tips:

  • Train evenly. When your instructor says “5 each side”, actually do that. Don’t just favour your A side and stand there quietly waiting for the next move.. We see you! 😂

  • Show extra love to your non-dominant side. If one side is clearly a bit of a struggle, do 1–2 extra reps on that side to help your body and brain catch up.

  • Take your time. Your non-dominant side will feel unfamiliar. That’s normal. Slow it down, go back to the basics, and take a breath before entering the move. Make sure your muscles are engaged!

  • Try freestyling on your non-dominant side. Flowing on your less-favoured side will build coordination, confidence, and creativity—and it might even unlock some unexpected movement magic ✨

Training both sides doesn’t just apply to pole either! Whether you’re training pole, aerials, floorwork or stretch and flexibility - always do both sides! 💪

Your B side can be a challenge—but it’s also an opportunity. Every time you give it attention, you’re building strength and coordination which will ultimately lead to being a stronger dancer overall! 🙌😍

Remember - it's totally normal to have an "off" side but practice makes progress 🩷
