Rosie's Journey

I have to be honest and say that I never thought I would be the person who would get into pole. I started my pole journey on a whim, and I think it was one of the best decisions I made. A friend of mine did it and I was gutted that I couldn’t join her studio as it was too far away from home/work but I stumbled upon Altitude Pole & Fitness Whanganui (Pole Dance Whanganui) and I am so glad I did.

My first class I was nervous and a little scared of how it was all going to pan out. I remember getting tangled as I tried to do a Pirouette and was unable to lift myself off the ground but I wanted more! I continued to go casually about once a week and started to see some slow improvement. I was still loving the excitement of learning a new spin or combo, and seeing my strength improve but I was allowing my busy schedule and my lack of direction get in the way of getting to the studio more.

Pole has taught me a number of things. Something I learnt about myself is that I don’t like to show people I'm not good at something. One thing I learnt about pole is that you have to be kinda bad at something before you get kinda good at something. With the help of pole I’m happy with just doing my best (even if my best results in my hanging sideways off a pole requiring assistance to dismount) because that Is just one attempt closer to getting the move right!

Now I’m not much further on my journey from what you just read, but there is one big change that will increase my progress by a million. That’s the new self-esteem and confidence pole has given me. Due to low levels of self-esteem and confidence I had been telling myself that I would never be good enough to compete or perform. Originally, I told myself my goals for pole were to have fun and increase my fitness, which aren’t bad goals at all but deep down I wanted more.

Through pole I realized that I am good enough, I am worth the effort and I can do amazing things if I put my mind to it.

So this is the start of a new journey, more time, more effort and more success and I’m excited to take this journey with the amazing family at Altitude Pole and Fitness.
